Taking a break from school and going back years later may feel challenging. However, many adults are choosing to return to school to continue their learning. In 2024, it’s estimated that millions of people over the age of 25 will be newly enrolled in college or continuing their college education. It’s clear that getting an education is something you can do anytime in your life, no matter your age.

More and more adults recognize the value of a college education and the variety of opportunities it may provide. Some people want to switch careers, others may want to get promoted and many just want to learn new things. Whatever the reason, going back to school may be useful in helping you reach your goals.

Finding the Right Fit: Choosing a School

Going back to school as an adult has some unique challenges. You most likely need to fit classes around your job and maybe even your family. Luckily, there are more options than ever in 2024. Many schools offer online classes or in-person sessions at night or on weekends. These options may make it easier to find a program that fits your busy schedule.

Picking the right school when you’re an adult learner is important. Consider finding out if the school is accredited. Being accredited means they’ve been checked by experts to ensure they’re teaching what they say they are. An accredited school will give you a diploma or degree that employers and other schools most likely respect, recognize and value.

Financial Aid for Adult Students

Money for school isn’t just for young students anymore! There are grants, loans and even scholarships available to help adults pay for college. The FAFSA application is like a key that unlocks this financial aid. Filling it out may help you find federal and state grants, loans, and even scholarships for going back to school. Some employers may help you pay for school and the government may give you educational tax breaks.

Balancing Lifelong Learning

One of the hardest parts about going to school as an adult may be finding the time to fit it all in. You’ve got work, family and now classes on top of that. But don’t worry, lots of people have done it! Consider telling your family and friends about your added responsibilities and see if they can help. You may need to change some things in your schedule to make room for studying. With a good plan and a little willpower, many adults find a way to balance school with everything else and it’s worth it!

As an adult learner, your life experiences may make learning more interesting for you and your classmates. You can see how what you’re learning applies to the real world, and you may even be able to teach your classmates a thing or two! Schools appreciate that adult learners bring different ideas to the classroom, making learning more well-rounded for everyone.

Going back to school as an adult is a big decision, but it may be a great way to improve your life and career. In 2024, there are more options than ever to make school work for you, with flexible schedules, online classes and financial aid. Whether you want a better job, to learn something new or just have some fun, going back to school can help you reach your goals. Don’t be afraid to join the millions of adults who are proving that lifelong learning is a great way to take action and change your life for the better!
