Why Make Your Own Face Mask?

There are lots of reasons why making your own face mask should be on your activity list this summer!

✅ It gives you plenty of control over what goes into it. Choose your ingredients, and know exactly what each one is – no chemicals you struggle to name.

✅ It’s perfect for sensitive skin which can easily react to harsh chemical ingredients.

✅ You can save a lot of money using whole ingredients from the supermarket compared to beauty products that can cost huge amounts of cash for tiny pots.

✅ You can experiment! It’s so quick and cheap to make your own face mask, you can play around with different recipes and ratios of ingredients to find something that works best for your skin type.

Finally, the biggest reason to make your own face mask? It’s fun! Whether you make it yourself or get friends or your children involved, it’s a relaxing and satisfying activity that doesn’t cost the earth – and results in some me-time when it’s time to put the mask on and relax for a few minutes, too.

Popular Homemade Face Mask Ingredients

There are several common ingredients you’ll find in homemade face mask recipes – and in your cupboard!

✅ Honey is known for its antibacterial qualities which can help improve acne

✅ Avocado can help stimulate collagen production

✅ Yoghurt provides lactic acid for gentle exfoliation and boosted hydration

✅ Oatmeal gives substance to a mask to make it easier to apply and acts as a gentle exfoliant

✅ Aloe vera is calming for irritated skin

Other common ingredients include bananas, sugar, oils like jojoba, argan, rosehip and hemp oil, and even cocoa powder. You can experiment with different combinations to find out which works best for your skin type.

Remember to test on a small patch of your skin first, to ensure there is no adverse reaction. Keep well away from your eyes, too. (And no, don’t eat the leftovers!).

For more advanced face mask recipes, you can add ingredients like specialist clay to add a thicker consistency and draw impurities from the skin. Using clay will elevate your homemade face mask to spa-level luxury.

Our Favourite Homemade Face Mask Recipe

Try this recipe for a luxe face mask that takes just a few minutes to make and offers a calming, soothing, and hydrating experience for your skin.

  1. Weigh the clays in a separate bowl from the rest of the ingredients. Try to be accurate with the weights, as it will ensure your mask is the best consistency.

2. Then add the clay to the rest of the ingredients and mix thoroughly. Make sure there are no lumps.

3. Then: apply! Avoid the lip and eye area, as the skin is more sensitive in these areas.

You can keep the mask in the fridge for a day or two, but it’s recommended to let it come back to room temperature before you apply.

Leave it for 20 minutes while you relax, then rinse off with warm water. Use once a week for a real treat that results in glowing, fresh skin!

Tips for Making a Face Mask

Make sure you’re getting the most out of your homemade face mask with these tips:

✅ Weigh ingredients and keep notes on the amounts that work best for your skin type so you can create the best customised face mask

✅ Cleanse your face before applying your mask

✅ Don’t leave a mask on longer than about 20 minutes to avoid skin irritation

✅ Use warm water to remove your mask, but try not to scrub it off

✅ Use a mask up to twice a week

Look for organic cleansers or soaps to keep your skin clean the days you’re not using a mask, to reduce the amount of chemicals you use on your skin, too.

What Else Can You Make At Home?

If you want to have a whole homemade spa day this summer, there are lots of other things you can make at home!

Look up recipes for face cleansers, foot scrubs, and even bath salts, and you could have a budget home spa that feels like a super luxury experience (and lots of fun to do, too).
