Mince Pie Season Is Here

It’s that warm, festive moment when the smell of spiced fruit and buttery pastry reminds you Christmas is coming. Mince pies are a timeless tradition – their roots go back to medieval times, when they were made with meat, fruit and spices. Over time, they’ve evolved into the sweet, fruity pastries we love today.

And mark your calendar: National Mince Pie Day is on 22 November. To celebrate, Morrisons is giving away 50,000 free mince pies in selected stores, plus hosting a giant “Post‑a‑Pie” event and festive sampling. (Morrisons)

Quick summary — the winners

  • Best budget buys: Aldi 6-pack (£1.25), Tesco own-brand 6-pack (£1.25), Iceland own-brand 6-pack (£1.25). Aldi

  • Best supermarket mid-range value: Lidl Deluxe All Butter 6-pack (regular £2.49, Lidl Plus deals sometimes cheaper). Lidl

  • Top premium picks: Waitrose No.1 Brown Butter / No.1 range (premium, typically £4.00 for selected No.1 mince pies); M&S Collection is another premium favourite. Waitrose

How I checked prices (short & transparent)

I looked at each supermarket’s official product pages (the supermarkets list pack sizes, offers and current prices on their 2025 pages). Where supermarkets show member/Clubcard/Lidl Plus prices I’ve noted the usual non-member cost and pointed to the product page so you can see any live offers. All product pages used are linked right after each entry.

What Morrisons Is Doing for Mince Pie Day

  • Morrisons is officially launching National Mince Pie Day on 22 November with 50,000 free Rich & Fruity mince pies across selected stores. (Retail Times)
  • There will be a “Post‑a‑Pie” event at Leeds Trinity: a giant mince pie‑shaped stall where you can send a complimentary Signature Mince Pie (with a festive message) to someone.
  • Morrisons also has pop-up Christmas market stalls in London (Bishop’s Square) and Edinburgh (Princes Street) from 19–23 November, where there will be free tastings of their award-winning The Best Signature Mince Pies.
  • More Card holders get rewarded too: on 22 Nov, when they buy any mince pie in-store, they’ll receive 500 More Points to use later.

What’s the Absolute Cheapest Mince Pie Right Now (2025)?

Here are some of the lowest-cost mince pies, using real supermarket / retailer‑sourced data or latest promotional info + well-known product lines:

Supermarket Option Price Source
Iceland 6‑pack own‑brand £1.25 Iceland website
Lidl Favorina 6‑pack £1.25 Lidl leaflet via My‑Leaflet
Sainsbury’s Own-brand 6-pack £1.25 Supermarket price comparison
Morrisons Rich & Fruity / basic 6-pack £1.50 Same comparison list
Tesco 6-pack mince pies £1.50 Same list
Waitrose 6-pack Christmas mince pies £2.25 Same list

Price‑Per‑Pie Breakdown

To figure out where you’re getting the most mince pie for your money, here’s an analysis by price per individual pie:

  • Iceland 6‑Pack: Very low cost; works out to a few pence per pie (given the 6-pack nature).
  • Morrisons Shortcrust (6): At £1.50 for 6, that’s about 25p per pie.
  • Morrisons Free Giveaway on 22 Nov: If you manage to pick one of the 50,000 free pies, that’s obviously 0p per pie — but limited to stock & store.
  • Tesco Finest and Waitrose options: more expensive per pie, but higher quality pastry and filling.

Vegan Mince Pies (2025) — What’s Known

For vegan options more broadly, you may still want to look in “Free From” or “Plant” ranges at other supermarkets — though availability and range vary.

Here are some highlighted picks:

  • Tesco Plant Chef Mince Pies (6‑pack) — A budget vegan option from Tesco’s Plant Chef line. Priced at £2.00 on Tesco’s site.

  • Tesco Free From Mince Pies (4‑pack) — Vegan, gluten-free and dairy-free option. Currently around £2.25 on Tesco’s website.

  • Tesco Free From Iced Topped Mince Pies — A more festive, iced version; around £2.50 for 4.

  • M&S Plant Kitchen Deliciously Vegan Mince Pies — Premium supermarket vegan option; £3.50 RRP according to guides. Vegan Recipe Club

  • Waitrose & Partners Free From Mince Pies — From Waitrose, 4‑pack, “free from” (milk & gluten) ; price around £2.75 in their online store.

  • Gluten Free Kitchen Vegan Mince Pies — More specialist / smaller batch; 2 mini pies, priced ~ £1.95 via Ocado.

  • Traditional Mince Pies (Vegan, Baked to Taste) — Artisan vegan mince pies; ~£2.50 for their pack on Baked To Taste.

  • The Foods of Athenry Vegan Starry Mince Pies — Vegan, potentially gluten‑free; more of a festive, niche item.

Why This Matters (MoneyMagpie Take‑Home)

  1. Best Freebie of the Season: Morrisons’ 22 Nov giveaway is a rare large-scale freebie — worth planning for if there’s a participating store near you.
  2. Value on a Budget: Even without the giveaway, Morrisons’ shortcrust pies at £1.50 are very good value.
  3. Step-up Options: For a richer pie, consider Tesco Finest or Iceland’s luxury all-butter.
  4. Experience the Festive Fun: The Post‑a‑Pie event is a cute way to share mince‑pie magic with a friend or family member.
  5. Keep an Eye on Vegan Lines: If vegan is your priority, check the Free From / Plant based aisles
