Having a baby is wonderful — but it’s also one of the biggest financial shocks most of us will ever experience.
From the moment you start buying nappies, wipes and tiny clothes that last about five minutes, the costs begin to mount. Yet what many new parents don’t realise is just how much help exists in the UK. There are cash grants, free baby boxes, nappies, food schemes and loyalty perks that can make a serious difference in that first year.
The key is knowing where to look — and applying early.
Here’s all the help for new parents available right now.
One of the biggest pieces of support available is the Sure Start Maternity Grant — a one-off payment of £500 that you don’t have to repay.
It’s designed to help with the cost of a new baby and can be spent on essentials like a pram, cot or washing machine.
You’ll usually qualify if you’re on Universal Credit or certain other benefits and:

Create an Amazon baby wishlist and complete the steps (usually adding items and making a small purchase) and you can receive a free welcome box with samples and baby items.
Signing up to supermarket and pharmacy baby clubs early can mean regular discounts on nappies, wipes and formula.
