Best for rotating categories

in our Bankrate review

  • The Discover it® Cash Back is unique on this list because instead of offering cash back on the same categories all year, it changes its rewards categories quarterly. As a cardholder, you’d earn 5 percent cash back in select rotating categories on up to $1,500 spent per quarter (activation required). After hitting that threshold, the rewards rate drops to 1 percent.

If you’re using mobile wallets to pay for everyday expenses, you’ll likely get a lot of use out of Discover’s rotating categories. Plus, Discover has previously added “digital wallets” as a rotating category before, meaning that anything you paid for through a digital wallet with your Discover card counted in your 5 percent category for that quarter (on up to $1,500, activation required).

While there’s no guarantee that Discover will make this a rotating category again, adding this no-annual-fee card to your mobile wallet means you’d at least be prepared to take advantage of the category if it ever does.
