Going on our summer holiday is the most exciting time of the season – but it comes with some logistical nightmares sometimes. Airport parking is ideal for many but it can be costly. But don’t panic! We’ve put together some tricks to help you save money on your travel to and from the airport this summer.

Use Park and Ride Car Parks

Compare Airport Parking Prices

While you CAN just turn up to some airport parking car parks, this is a bad idea. You’ll be charged an awful lot more for your stay!

Make sure you know which airport terminal your flight will leave from, and look at your car park options well in advance of your journey. You’ll be able to make the most of the best airport parking discounts with a bit of research.

While you can research airport parking prices directly on each website, try using a comparison website. Airport Parking With Us is a UK-wide comparison site that lets you find the best deal from your departure airport for all UK airports.

Use Park and Ride Car Parks

It might seem faster to park at the car park nearest to the airport, but this is also going to be the most expensive option.

Look for airport parking that is further out from the airport but which offers a park and ride service. This will take a little more planning, as you’ll need to allow more time for the transfer, but it’s worth it as you’ll save considerable amounts on your airport parking booking.

For those who don’t want to do a park and ride service, whether due to time constraints, mobility limitations, or simply because they want a more luxury service, you could opt for a Meet and Greet service. This will get you much closer to the airport, and then your car will be taken to the car park on your behalf so you don’t need to worry about finding a space. They’ll then pick you up at a designated time and airport location on your return.

Make sure your car insurance covers this option, or that the meet and greet service has comprehensive insurance.

Car Pool to Split Costs

If you’re travelling with friends or family members outside of your household, consider car pooling to save on airport parking costs. If you can all fit in a single car, that’s a big chunk of change saved as you split the cost!

For those travelling on their own to the airport, it’s worth checking out car pool websites to see if someone else in your area is travelling to the same airport on the same day as you. This might be a long shot in quieter areas, but in cities you’re likely to find someone else willing to split fuel and parking costs to get you there.

Consider Public Transport

If you have to travel a long way to your airport, it could be much faster and cheaper to take the train or bus. Using National Railcards, you could save a third on rail fares, too.

However, what we really mean here is look at your arrival and departure airports. Sometimes, it can be much cheaper to fly out from one and back into another – such as from London Heathrow and back to Gatwick Airport. Many people discount this option if they are considering driving to the airport.

But, you could save a lot of money on your flight costs AND on airport parking if you park at one and get public transport either to or from the airport. For example, you might wish to return to Gatwick but leave from Heathrow – park at Gatwick and get the train to Heathrow, then your car is ready and waiting for you at the airport parking on your return at Gatwick! It takes some logistical planning, and some extra time – but that could save you literally hundreds of pounds on your flight costs, especially if you’re travelling with family.
